{RKT’s + Fondant} Mr. Mallard.

{RKT’s + Fondant} Mr. Mallard.

 My oldest thought this was the coolest cake, being the avid duck hunter he is. Last week I had an order for a “mallard” cake. I started him with a structure some what duck like, out of Rice Krispy Treats. When I make RKT’s for molding, I don’t normally add butter. I only melt marshmallows and add Rice Krispy’s. To keep the mixture from sticking to your hands, lightly rub butter on them. Next, I coated it with a layer of buttercream, simply to hold the fondant on and to add smoothness. Fondant is now applied. Let the sculpting and modeling begin. When it got to the feathering look, I though about the veiner tool I have for making flowers. It was PERFECT for making indentations to look like feathers. It is made by Wilton. I painted the duck with Wilton Gel colors, which is the same colors that I use to tint my icing. Yep, so the duck is still totally edible! Here again, some pics for you.

Here is an up close photo to show the detail on using the veiner to make the feather look.

Now, for the finished product!

( Tip: I made the cattails out of skewers that I attached an oblong piece of gumpaste to, then painted the stick green and the gumpaste brown. The tall grass was made out of gumpaste that I allowed to dry before I placed it on the cake.)

{Gumpaste + Fondant} Strawberry Shortcake.

Last month I made my niece a Strawberry Shortcake Cake for her 3rd birthday. The cake part itself wasn’t a challenge at all, but let me tell you her face was. Especially being that I was doing it all by hand. PERIOD. I don’t know if any of you have ever noticed it, but to replicate “licensed characters” is HARD to say the least. Some elements of them are easier than others, but often times they look a little goofy once done..ha! I’ve had my share of those cake uh-oh’s too, especially on a Tinkerbell one time. I tried to totally make her from hand out of fondant…omg…she looked like the fairy godmother instead…heehee! I learned one thing from that cake experience: I don’t hand make 3-D Tinkerbell’s anymore! Ok, back to SSC 🙂 I dove again into making a character face. I thought a time or two I was going to have to go buy a SSC figurine at Wal-Mart to put on top…especially when I got to the part of making her eyes…UGGH!  Just for the fun of it, I would like to show you guys the steps of making her face. (Please excuse the quality of these pictures. They were taken with my phone. I had no intention of anyone EVER seeing them!) I used a sugar cookie for the base, then I started covering and layering with fondant and gumpaste. I used gumpaste on her hair, simply because it dries quick and very hard. Fondant dries much slower making it easier to work with also, but sometime the durability of gumpaste is a must.

The finished product…yay!

WE’VE MOVED :) (but still here! April 2011)

{ April 2011 – WE’RE BACK!!! }

Update: In 2009 this was my blog for showing my pictures of my goodies. In Nov. 2009 I opened my own website (lovincookiesncream.com). The purpose of this “moving” post was to notify my followers of my good news then and link them to the new site. Well, I’m glad I never closed this blog simply for this reason…a year and a half later I need it. I’ve had so so so many request to do classes that I’ve decided to use this blog as an interactive tool. I plan to share tips, tricks, how-to’s, recipes, pictures and everything else along the way. Please feel free to ask any questions you many have or leave comments. Be sure to visit our website for more pictures, and also follow us on FB (see button above). I’m only an e-mail away- britney@lovincookiesncream.com .
